Magnetite Fe3O4(111)

The surface structure determined from LEED
yields a strongly relaxed bulk termination.
It exposes a quarter-monolayer of Fe (blue)
above a complete monolayer of O, of which a quarter (red)
is raised above the remainder (pink).
Deeper in the surface and in the bulk, one finds,
between successive complete layers of O,
3/4 monolayers of Fe in tetrahedral positions (light green)
or octahedral positions (dark green).
Interlayer spacings determined by LEED are compared to bulk values
(given between parentheses).
